ASIO Driver Windows Free Download – ASIO (Audio Stream Input / Output), developed by Steinberg, is a multichannel and multiplatform audio transfer protocol adopted by many manufacturers of audio / MIDI sequencing applications. It allows the software to access the multi-channel capabilities of a wide range of powerful sound cards.
ASIO extends the basic functionality of a standard computer sound card, most of which can only provide stereo audio input and output (two channels). The ASIO specification defines the interface that professional sound card manufacturers must use to create an ASIO driver for their hardware. This controller allows the server’s audio / MIDI application to “see” all available inputs and outputs on the sound card. The user can assign these I / O ports as needed to record or play back when using ASIO compatible software. This allows users to record more tracks simultaneously than the previous two-channel limitation imposed by a standard sound card.
ASIO ignores the normal audio path of a user application through middleware layers of the Windows operating system, so that an application connects directly to the hardware of the sound card. Each layer omitted causes a reduction in latency (the delay between the application that sends the audio information and its playback by the sound card, or the input signals of the sound card available to the application). In this way, ASIO offers a relatively simple way to access multiple audio inputs and outputs independently.
Support for the interface is generally limited to Microsoft Windows. From Windows Vista, KMixer has been removed and replaced with WASAPI and a new WaveRT port driver.
In 2007, there is also an experimental ASIO driver for Wine, a Windows compatibility layer for Linux. This wineasio driver uses the JACK audio server as an audio server and allows many ASIO compatible applications to run with low latency under WINE.
As a proprietary protocol, compatibility with Windows-based DAW software and other recording software is not universal. For example, the Audacity Audio Editor User Manual states: “License restrictions prevent us from including ASIO support in Audacity versions, but Audacity can be compiled with ASIO support for non-private, distributable use.
A popular alternative is to use the ASIO4All driver from German programmer Michael Tippach, which can often provide low latency on sound cards that are not designed for music production.
The commercial version of the USB Audio driver supports Alesis USB mixing desks, ART USB, Audiotrak EX / EX5 / Maya 5.1 USB (48kHz only), Audiotrak EX7 / Maya 7.1 USB, Audiotrak OPTOPlay, Creative Audigy 2 NX (48kHz only / Windows only), Creative Extigy (48kHz only), Creative MP3+ (48kHz only), Creative SoundBlaster Live 24bit external, Digidesign Mbox, Elektor USB audio, Event EZBus, Edirol UA-1A (44.1kHz only), Edirol UA1-X, Edirol UA-3(D), Griffin iMic, Griffin PowerWave, HHB Portadisc, Hercules MusePocket (48kHz only), I-O Data D2VOX, Lexicon Omega (no MIDI yet), M-Audio Audiophile USB, Opcode DAT-/SonicPort (optical), Onkyo MSE-U33(HB), Onkyo SE-U55(X(S)), Philips Aurilium (48kHz only), Roland-ED UA-30, Sitecom 5.1 audio adapter, SKNET Digital Sound Station, Terratec Aureon 5.1 USB (48 kHz only), Vivanco 5.1 Audio Converter (48kHz only) and Waveidea UASC-1.
Note : There’s some limitations on Extigy: 48 kHz, stereo output, line and mic input (digital input only while output is muted), no MIDI, no remote control functionality. But low latency.
